Periodontology is an area of dentistry that deals with treatment of periodontal tissues (periodontium), which surrounds the tooth and gives him support, enabling its function. Periodontium includes: gums (gingiva), periodontal fiber, cementum and alveolar bone.
What causes periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease usually begins with mild gums inflammation - gingivitis. If not rehabilitated with removal of dental and soft plaque, the disease spreads to the rest of periodontal tissues. This condition manifests in swelling, redness and bleeding of the gum around the tooth, the infection is spreading more and more deeply, to form a periodontal pocket in which small stones are present (concrements) which firmly adhered to the tooth exacerbate the inflammation.
The infection leads to destruction of the bone tissue around the teeth, which in time can lead in bone eburnation and eventually in the advanced stage of the disease which result in tooth loss.
Besides teeth, additional bad effect of this disease can reflect badly on the entire body, especially the heart and circulatory system.
